Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, public health, and responsible governance with the inauguration of the Edo State Environmental Compliance Corps (EECC).

The inauguration ceremony, which marked the deployment of 100 personnel as the first batch of the corps, was held as part of efforts to strengthen enforcement of environmental laws across the state.

Governor Okpebholo was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Finance, Hon. Emmanuel Okoebor.

In his address, the governor charged members of the newly inaugurated corps to carry out their duties with courage, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose, stressing that their conduct must inspire public compliance and build trust in government institutions.

“The inauguration of the EECC today reaffirms this administration’s commitment to environmental protection, public health, and responsible governance. A clean environment is not only a social necessity but also an economic imperative that supports productivity, investment, and the overall well-being of our people,” the governor said.

He urged the corps members to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rule of law, while working closely with communities to promote environmental awareness and compliance.

“I formally inaugurate the EECC and charge you to serve with courage, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose. Let your actions inspire compliance, your conduct earn respect, and your commitment strengthen public trust,” he added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Nosa Adams, explained that the 100 personnel inaugurated constitute the first batch of the Edo State Environmental Compliance Corps.

According to him, the officers were selected through a credible process and underwent an intensive four-day training programme to prepare them for the enforcement of environmental regulations.

Hon. Adams disclosed that the corps will be deployed across the three senatorial districts of the state to enforce compliance with the Edo State Environmental Waste Management and Pollution Law recently signed by Governor Okpebholo.

He described the law as comprehensive, noting that it addresses critical issues relating to environmental protection and the ecosystem.

“To implement the law effectively, we need people who are knowledgeable about its provisions and committed to ensuring compliance. These officers have been trained to understand what it takes to enforce environmental laws,” he said.

The commissioner expressed confidence that full implementation of the law would lead to a healthier, cleaner, and greener Edo State.

“It is our conviction that if this law is fully implemented, Edo State will enjoy a healthier, cleaner, and greener environment for all,” he added.

The inauguration of the EECC is part of the Okpebholo administration’s broader strategy to strengthen environmental governance and improve the quality of life for residents across the state.
