His Royal Majesty, Omo N'oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, has suspended 67 Enigies (dukes) for alleged "anti-palace and rebellious activities."
The unprecedented suspension was announced in a letter dated March 7, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. Festus Alenkhe. The letter, referenced BTC.A40/VOL.lVVI/438 and titled "Suspension of Some Enigies in Benin Kingdom," was signed by Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.
The letter stated: "I am directed to inform you that some Enigies in Benin Kingdom have been suspended by His Royal Majesty, Omo N'oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin as a result of their anti-palace and rebellious activities against the Oba of Benin and the traditional institution,"
Confirming the suspension of 67 Enigies is an attached list to the referenced letter.
However, the precise nature of the "anti-palace and rebellious activities" was not detailed in the letter, leaving room for speculation and heightened interest within the kingdom and beyond. This mass suspension is considered a highly unusual action within the traditional structure of the Benin Kingdom, where Enigies hold significant authority and play crucial roles in the administration of their respective domains.
The announcement has already sparked discussions among residents of Benin City and across Edo State, with many expressing shock and seeking clarity on the reasons behind the Oba's decision. Traditionalists and observers of the Benin Kingdom's customs are closely watching the developments, anticipating further pronouncements from the palace.
The suspension of such a large number of Enigies is expected to have far-reaching implications for the administration of the affected areas and the overall functioning of the traditional council. The palace is yet to release further details, and the public awaits further information regarding the future of the suspended Enigies and the measures to be taken to ensure the continued stability and smooth functioning of the Benin Kingdom.
This development underscores the Oba of Benin's unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity and sanctity of the traditional institution and maintaining order within the kingdom. The incident is sure to be discussed for a long time to come.
