The Edo State Government has strongly rejected what it described as misleading and sensational social media narratives surrounding the unfortunate incident that occurred during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City recently.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Dr Patrick Akhere Ebojele , the government insists that certain individuals deliberately twisted the facts in an attempt to discredit the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
It explained that the stadium recorded an unprecedented turnout as thousands of excited school children from different parts of the state trooped into the facility to participate in the celebration. To ensure easy access, all entrances into the stadium were opened to admit participants and guests.
However, despite the arrangements put in place, some overexcited children reportedly became unruly at one of the gates, leading to a rowdy situation.
In an attempt to disperse the crowd and restore order, a bouncer deployed pepper spray, triggering panic within the area. A few students sustained minor injuries in the process.
According to the statement, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who was physically present at the stadium during the incident, immediately took charge of the situation by assisting affected children with first aid while those requiring further medical attention were swiftly evacuated to the Edo Specialist Hospital for proper treatment.
The government confirmed that all affected students have since been treated and safely reunited with their families.
According to the government, investigations into the incident have already commenced, while the bouncer involved is currently being interrogated by the Police to determine both the immediate and remote causes of his actions.
The government reaffirmed its strong commitment to the safety, welfare and security of all residents, particularly children, stressing that isolated incidents at large public gatherings should not be exploited to spread panic or tarnish the image of the state.
It further called on social media users and members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and tension within the state.
The statement noted that the massive turnout of students for the Children’s Day celebration was itself a reflection of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s strong commitment and huge investment in the education sector, which has continued to inspire confidence among pupils, parents and schools across Edo State.
The Edo State Government also commended security personnel, medical teams and volunteers for their swift intervention and professionalism, noting that their prompt response helped to quickly calm the situation and prevent further escalation.
