His Royal Highness, the Oghieaga of Ibvie, Mallam Ali D. Sulayman, has urged political office holders and traditional leaders to embrace accountability not only during the holy month of Ramadan but also all year round.
Speaking on Friday at his palace in Imiegba, North Ibie, in Etsako East Local Government Area, the royal father said Ramadan should serve as a period of renewal that strengthens leaders’ sense of responsibility before God and the people.
He said, "We are grateful to Allah for this opportunity to witness another Ramadan. It is a period of renewal. The ultimate aim of fasting is not just to go hungry but God’s consciousness,”
Mallam Sulayman emphasized that God-consciousness must translate into upright conduct in public office, stressing that leadership is a trust that demands transparency, justice, and service beyond the fasting season.
He said, “Every position is a trust from Allah for which we will all account for. If they don’t discharge their responsibility, it is not the duty of the followers to start shouting. What the followers owe the leaders is to pray for them and cooperate with them. If they don’t discharge their responsibility through that opportunity, Allah can replace them.”
He warned that the lessons of Ramadan, discipline, sacrifice, and compassion, must not end with the month but should guide governance and community leadership throughout the year.
Addressing fellow traditional rulers, he said positions are not merely ceremonial but meant to bring happiness and development to the people.
He noted, “Positions are not just meant to be occupied. They are meant for the purpose of bringing happiness to others. Whether you are Muslim or non-Muslim, this is an opportunity for humanity to dominate your activities,”
The monarch further reminded leaders that material accumulation should not overshadow their duty to serve with integrity.
He advised, cautioning that worldly possessions are temporary and that all leaders will ultimately account for their stewardship both in this world and in the Hereafter.
He said, “If you are in a position of authority, ensure that you do the right thing,”
He concluded by urging leaders at all levels including President, Governor, and Local Government Chairmen to remain God-conscious during and after Ramadan, assuring that citizens will continue to pray for and cooperate with leaders who uphold justice and responsibility.
Mallam Sulayman also offered prayers for peace, unity, and the full spiritual benefits of Ramadan for the Muslim Ummah and the nation at large.
