The fast of Ramadan is compulsory on the basis of the command of Allah.


Allah says in Quran 2:83: "O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become pious"


Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated that he heard Allah's Messenger (SAW) saying: "Islam is built on five pillars: Bearing witness that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (SAW) is His messenger; Establishing the prayers; Giving out Zakat; Performing the pilgrimage and Observing the fast of Ramadan"


In the Hadith of Abu Hurairah, the messenger of Allah (SAW) said,: "fast when you see the new moon...". This is a command that necessitates obedience without the option of choice.
