The Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a ₦2 billion grant for infrastructural development at Edo State University, Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area, as part of deliberate efforts to strengthen the institution, improve learning conditions, and reposition the education sector.
In addition to the grant, the Governor also increased the institution’s monthly subvention from ₦100 million to ₦250 million, underscoring his administration’s commitment to sustainable funding and academic excellence.
The Governor made the announcement on Monday, April 6, 2026, during the commissioning of the Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library and the groundbreaking ceremony for the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre and the Edo State University Health Centre.
Describing the occasion as a defining moment for the institution, Governor Okpebholo said the projects reflect his administration’s resolve to reposition education and promote holistic development.
He said, "Today is a great day for Edo State University, Iyamho. Since assuming office, our administration has remained committed to repositioning the education sector in Edo State. The Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library, the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre, and the Edo State University Health Centre are clear symbols of progress, partnership, and shared responsibility in advancing education and health in Edo State,”
The Governor paid tribute to Chief Ehi Aganmonmen for donating computers and furniture for the E-Library, noting that the contribution would significantly enhance digital learning and academic excellence.
He added, "I wish to specially thank Chief Ehi Aganmonmen for his generous donation. Your contribution will significantly enhance digital learning and academic excellence in this institution,”
He also commended Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia for supporting the development of the Fitness Centre and other projects, describing the gesture as a strategic investment in student wellbeing.
The Governor said, “I appreciate Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia for his commitment to supporting the building and equipping of the Fitness Centre. This is an important investment in the health and wellbeing of our students. Thank you for believing in our young people,”
Governor Okpebholo further highlighted the importance of collective responsibility, citing contributions from other stakeholders, including a parent who volunteered to sponsor architectural designs and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetimirin, who donated one month’s salary.
“That you, the Vice-Chancellor, can donate your salary, why will Edo State Government not support the university projects? On this note, Edo State Government will give you ₦2 billion,” he declared.
He added, “These are not small things, these are sacrifices that speak louder than words,”
Reinforcing the need for collaboration, the Governor called on corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals to partner with government in driving development.
He said, "Government alone cannot do everything. We call on others to emulate these noble gestures and join hands with us in building a stronger Edo State,”
On healthcare, the Governor expressed support for the upgrade of the university’s medical facility.
He stated, “I commend the university for the new Health Centre to replace the existing sick bay. This is an important step toward providing better healthcare services to our university community. I assure you of our continued support,”
Addressing students and management, he stressed the need for proper use and maintenance of the facilities.
He charged, “To our students, these facilities are for your growth, use them well. To the university management, ensure proper maintenance and sustainability. We are investing in your future, and we expect discipline and purpose in return,”
The Governor concluded by reaffirming his administration’s vision for Edo State.
He said, “It is my honour to commission the E-Library and perform the groundbreaking for the Fitness Centre and Health Centre. Together, we can boldly say that Renewed Hope has come, and a new Edo has risen,”
The projects align with the administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritises education, healthcare, and infrastructure as key drivers of sustainable development.
