…Harps on accountability, revenue optimization, and support for ongoing Gov. Okpebholo's developmental plans

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Mr. John Osirenimhe Odior (FCA, ACTI), has directed all scratch card vendors and revenue collectors within the haulage sector to optimize revenue collection and strictly adhere to the terms of their engagement or face termination.
The directive was issued during a stakeholders’ meeting involving operators in the haulage, agricultural, and produce collection sectors, held at the Sunny Okundia Training School in Benin City.
While appreciating the contributions of vendors and collectors so far, Mr. Odior noted that the Service has observed irregularities in beat placements, a situation he assured would be reviewed to ensure a more equitable and transparent process. He, however, strongly condemned non-compliance with official procedures at various collection points.
He emphasized that tax revenue remains critical to the state’s development, stressing that the success of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration will largely depend on its ability to deliver on its mandate through available resources.
According to him: “For the Governor to be returned after four years, he will be judged by his performance, and he needs revenue to perform. If you love and support this government, you must collect levies with civility and diligence, and also pay your own taxes. If we are to work together, you must be transparent; let us be open with one another.”
Mr. Odior further stated that the Revenue Service is committed to conducting its operations in a manner that benefits all Edo citizens.
He pledged continued support to vendors through simplified tax processes, public enlightenment programmes, enforcement activities, and incentives for top-performing collectors.
He also urged stakeholders, particularly directors of limited liability companies and business owners, to file their annual tax returns before the March 31 deadline.
He added, "Today, we can see that your tax is working because Governor Okpebholo is working; therefore, pay your tax,”
Also speaking at the meeting, the Executive Director of MDA Services, Hon. Engr. Jackson Eribo, ACTI, expressed concern over the below-target performance of scratch card vendors. He described the trend as worrisome, noting that it undermines the Service’s objectives, and called for stricter disciplinary measures to address the shortfall.
In their separate responses, revenue collectors and vendors highlighted operational challenges encountered in the field but collectively assured the Service of their commitment to meeting set targets going forward.
