The Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor Esq, has emphasized the need for open dialogue, unity, and responsible participation of Muslims in governance.

He disclosed this while giving his remarks at the Muslim Summit held in Benin City, organized by the AMANA LEGACY Foundation with the theme, “The Role of the Muslim Ummah in Promoting Good Governance.”

Ikhilor, who said he deliberately avoided the podium to keep his remarks brief, praised the gathering as a “welcome development,” stressing that such conversations, open, honest, and sometimes difficult are what build progressive societies.

He underscored the value of freedom of speech but jokingly recalled a famous remark attributed to a former African leader who said he had no problem with freedom of speech but could not guarantee freedom after speech.

He reassured, "For this audience, both freedom of speech and freedom after speech are guaranteed, Insha Allah.”

He said the summit offers a platform for Muslims to reflect on their roles in governance, strengthen democratic values, and create pathways for constructive engagement within the Ummah.

In his speech, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mallam Gani Audu, praised the organizers for the high level of mobilization and coordination evident at the summit.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to address the gathering and reassured participants of his commitment to the state’s security and development, which had caused his slight delay to the event.

Audu emphasized three key points: Muslim unity, peaceful coexistence, and active political participation.

He noted that the progress recorded by Muslims in Edo State’s current political landscape was not by accident but a product of deliberate participation and sacrifice.

He said, “We have laid a solid foundation for our young Muslim politicians coming behind. Once you participate, people watch you. People observe your involvement.”

He urged continued commitment to strengthening and building a stronger base for Muslims within governance structures.

The summit brought together scholars, political leaders, traditional rulers, public officers, and young Muslim professionals, creating a platform for reflection, mentorship, and strategic positioning of the Ummah in governance.

The AMANA LEGACY Foundation through the Executive Director, Barr. AbdulBasit Ismail Musa said the event is part of its broader mission to strengthen the Muslim community’s contribution to good governance, peacebuilding, and socio-economic empowerment in Edo State and beyond.
