The Edo State Government has announced the establishment of the Ecological Funding and Management Commission aimed at addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development in the state.
The announcement was made on Monday through a special government statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq.
According to the statement, the creation of the Commission was approved by His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State, as part of a broader strategy to institutionalize ecological governance and align the state's environmental efforts with national and international standards.
Described as a “landmark initiative,” the Commission is expected to provide a legal and institutional framework for the transparent mobilization and utilization of ecological resources, improved coordination among stakeholders, and the promotion of climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and environmental justice.
Governor Okpebholo has also approved the appointment of four key individuals to pioneer the affairs of the new Commission.
The names of the nominated officials which have been submitted to the Edo State House of Assembly for consideration and confirmation are, Dr. Blessing Agbomhere, Esq., Executive Chairman; Felix Ibhade, Executive Director (Projects); Ivie Uwaifo, Executive Director (Administration) and Khadijat Yusuf, Executive Director (Finance)
These individuals are expected to bring diverse expertise in law, administration, finance, and project management to the Commission’s leadership team.
The statement emphasized that the establishment of the Commission reflects the Edo State Government’s strong commitment to safeguarding the environment for both present and future generations. It also aims to position the state as a national leader in climate action and sustainable development.
The statement read, “The Commission will serve as a catalyst for change, ensuring ecological sustainability while fostering economic and social development,”
With the names of the appointees forwarded to the State House of Assembly, confirmation hearings are expected in the coming weeks.
If approved, the Commission will begin operations immediately, marking a new chapter in Edo State’s environmental governance.
