The Edo State Government has announced the appointment of Professor (Mrs.) Eunice Eboserehimen Omonzejie as the new Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.
The appointment takes immediate effect, following the approval of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State.
According to a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor Esq , Professor Omonzejie was selected from a shortlist of three candidates recommended by the University’s Governing Council. Her selection marks a significant milestone in the leadership of the institution, as she becomes one of the few women to assume the role of Vice Chancellor in the university’s history.
Professor Omonzejie is a renowned scholar in French and Francophone African Literatures and has served for decades in the Department of Modern Languages at AAU. Her academic contributions span African and Francophone literary studies, gender studies, and cultural studies.
She is widely respected for her prolific research output and editorial work, including co-editing French Language in Nigeria: Essays in Honour of UFTAN Pacesetters and Language Matters in Contemporary West Africa. She is also the author of Women Novelists in Francophone Black Africa: Views, Reviews and Interviews.
Beyond her academic achievements, Professor Omonzejie has played a prominent role in academic leadership and advocacy.
As former President of the Ambrose Alli University Chapter of the National Association of Women Academics (NAWACS), she championed research development, mentorship, and the empowerment of female academics and students within the university community.
The Edo State Government described her appointment as a reflection of her "academic excellence, administrative experience, and commitment to the growth and development of Ambrose Alli University." The government also expressed confidence in her ability to lead the institution toward achieving its vision of producing world-class graduates and driving research and innovation.
Professor Omonzejie is expected to formally assume office in the coming days.
