The Edo State Governor, His Excellency , Senator Monday Okpebholo has pledged that his administration will increase funding and policy support for children and adults living with autism.
The position of the governor was made known by the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Edesili Anani Okpebholo while delivering her goodwill message at the Autism awareness programme 2025 with the theme: "Advancing Neurodiversity and the united nations sustainable development goal (SDGS)" held at the Festival Hall, government house on Monday, July 7, 2025.
She called on stakeholders to prioritize inclusivity and support for individuals with autism as they face discrimination in access to quality education, healthcare, employment and social acceptance.
According to her, "The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has pledged increased funding and policy support to strengthen diagnostic, therapeutic and educational services for children and adults on the spectrum, underscoring the government's commitment to improving health outcomes and social inclusion"
"It's essential that we work together to create a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. We are here to advocate for inclusion, support and acceptance of individuals with autism"
" Let us provide them with the necessary resources and care to reach their full potential. Let's raise awareness about autism and promote education that supports individuals with autism".
In his welcome address, the commissioner for health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole said, the World autism awareness day is a global call for compassion for understanding, for action.
He noted that the celebration is an opportunity to shine a light on the unique strength, talents and perspectives of individuals living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
He said, "Beyond the blue ribbons, hashtags, and public messages, our collective responsibility lies in transforming awareness into tangible support in homes, classrooms, hospitals and in our policies".
He noted that parents and caregivers are the heroes, navigating challenges with love and unwavering commitment.
He said, Edo State Government is committed to expanding early screening programme in primary healthcare centers; supporting inclusive education policies in schools; launching awareness campaigns that reach every ward in every local government; providing mental health support to parents and caregivers amongst others.
Mr. Paul Ndukwe and Mrs Sandra Iyere who are parents of autism children commended Edo State government for organizing such events to create awareness for inclusivity and discourage discrimination against persons living with ASD.
The parents noted that taking care of these children are most difficult but were able to overcome the challenges thrown at them by the situation through love, patience and determination to ensure that these children become great in life despite the challenges.
The programme organized by the Edo State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State saw children with autism across various schools, teachers, parents, stakeholders participating in the 2025 World autism awareness day.
